Dr Aryati Yashadhana

Dr Aryati Yashadhana is an early career researcher whose work focuses on socioeconomic, cultural and political determinants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (herein Aboriginal) health, intersectional health equity (gender, race, class), and international development. Her research has largely taken place in collaboration with Aboriginal community members in Australia (NSW and Northern Territory), with a focus on analysing the cultural dimensions of access in the context of eye health and chronic disease. Dr Yashadhana specialises in qualitative and participatory methodologies, with a particular interest in Indigenous and decolonizing theories, the way marginalised peoples and cultures interface with dominant systems and structures, and analyzing access to health systems and services. Her research builds on strong connections to Aboriginal communities, researchers and organisations, and an in-depth understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultural protocols. Dr Yashadhana champions genuine participatory approaches to research, that contribute to the decolonizing of health services and systems. Dr Yashadhana has been a co-investigator on studies conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa (Malawi, Tanzania), Latin America (Colombia), and South East Asia (Vietnam) investigating access to eye care services and related socioeconomic and cultural determinants, whereby she led local research teams to conduct qualitative case studies. She has extensive experience in undertaking translational research, and running qualitative research workshops in cross-cultural environments.
