The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) is the peak federal body representing Australians who come from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
We believe that Australia’s society must be fair and that people from CALD backgrounds should have the same opportunities as all Australians. An important part of our work is to consult with CALD communities across Australia. Only by speaking with, and learning from, CALD communities can we understand the difficulties these communities face, their strengths and how they contribute to Australian society. We can then tell government, business and the community about things that are important for CALD people, like difficulties in using health, disability and aged care services.
FECCA has recently appointed Dr Janecke Wille as the Senior Research and Policy Officer to make sure that FECCA can be more involved with research across the country that are looking into issues impacting people from CALD backgrounds. We believe that more research into these issues is necessary to understand the diversity that exist among people from CALD backgrounds and to hopefully improve Australia’s services and policies to adapt to these diversities. Janecke has years of experience in this area, both as a policy and project officer with FECCA and as a researcher looking at settlement experiences of South Sudanese new arrivals in Australia.
